Hintf: Hi! Thanks for this interview. How did this project came to life?

Thank you very much for this space you offer me from Hintf to spread this project. As you already know, Inn Oppiah! is a one-man band. The listener thinks he or she is listening to a band, but when they go to a live concert they realise that on stage there is only one person with the help of no one. Therefore, it is kind of a traditional singer-songwriter raised to the volume of a band. Do you know what it feels like to be a singer-songwriter and hearing the audience talking louder than you? This called for a compensation. Inn Oppiah! is the revenge.

Hintf: What is your musical background?

A world divided into two blocks. Those who sweep (the poor, the different, the disabled), and those who are swept (condemned to the madness of incomprehension, discrimination, ignominy). The word "inopia" means poverty, indigence, shortage,... Lyrics analyse their reasons and the reasons behind discriminatory attitudes. Money and the desire to have it turns us into arse-lickers eager to collect things. We empty ourselves as people in order to fill our lives with useless things that enslave us every day. This same logic applies to the society we belong to. Progress? I don't think so.

Hintf: What inspires you when composing?

Everything that strikes me big time, like the reality of my family and friends, or the random slaughters in Palestine, Iran or Syria. I'm no UN ambassador nor am I on top of everything happening worldwide, but sometimes you find out certain things that provoke in you a feeling of so much abhorrence and disgust that makes you shout at everything you don't want to be included. That, along with the large number of assholes that insist in making your life harder everyday provide the contents of my compositions.

Hintf: You've been on tour this year, did you have a good time?

It's been really good to celebrate Inn Oppiah!'s 10th anniversary on stages in Galiza and Portugal. I've been working really hard to coordinate everything (dates, gigs, bands, ...) and the final outcome is really positive. I'm very happy with how the journey has gone and the amount of friends, associatons and bands that are now also a part of my life and of the history of the project.

Hintf: You've also been here in Portugal, what are your memories from the portuguese audience?

Shortly after an Inn Oppiah! concert begins you realise it is not about catchy rhythms or choruses, but to be aware that even being alone or in minority you can and you should strive to get along. Whenever someone is able to see this, neither the language nor the imaginary borders in the maps are dividing us anymore. In Portugal I've received a good deal of support and love after the gigs and I've found good friends among the Núcleo Antifascista in Braga or among bands like Grito!, Simbiose, Falcata, Horas Vagas, Capela Mortuária, ... I feel very grateful to the Portuguese audience and to the people that helped organise the gigs in Braga, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Santarém, and Porto. I look forward to meeting them often in the future.

Hintf: What are the plans for the upcoming months? Are you working on new material?

The truth is that Inn Oppiah! is constantly evolving and developing, so I hardly ever repeat a setlist on stage, and I try to include new material in every place I visit. On the other hand, I self-produce my albums from the beginning, although lately, due to lack of time rather than intention, the released tracks have all been recorded live, which helps the listener to get a real taste of what he or she will discover in the live performance. I don't worry about writing new songs or producing more albums. Things will arrive with effort in due time.

Hintf: What was the most unforgettable Inn Oppiah! gig until now?

Playing in Self-Managed Social Centres is the reason of existence of the project. It's always special, and even more when they open the doors for you again. The same happens with self-managed festivals. Here we should highlight the huge party thrown by Grito! on the presentation of their album “Maldiçao“ at Barracuda in Porto, including the great atmosphere and top-notch bands that made up the bill. It will be hard to forget.

Hintf: What places would you recommend in your hometown for your fans to visit and have a good beer and listen to some good music?

My city is not different from yours. You can't listen to any good music in any public places. People sit of cafe terraces to forget their grey lives. The only place that deserves a visit if you go to Pontevedra is Liceo Mutante, a cultural project outside mainstream of the commercial trends that bets on all the underground energy. This is a gathering space for important local fringe bands, big self-produced or self-edited projects well-known worldwide. Meanwhile, you can enjoy some of the best homebrewed beers in town. 100% recommended.

Hintf: Would you like to leave a message for our readers?

It is essential to tell everybody who has artistic inclinations and needs not to wait for anybody, do it the way you can, do it the way you know how, do it. And once you do it, people will come and will give their opinion about what you're doing. Follow your way and don't care what they say. Do it from your heart. Whenever you look back you'll always see your most real and human self. Fight everyday without thinking of being better than anybody. We're mates in the same shipwreck. You're not special for lighting fire in the snow, but for keeping and spreading that fire.
